Welcoming New Kids on the Block

Bike shop owners tell me they're selling more bikes this year to people who are returning to cycling for recreation and commuting. It seems that $4-a-gallon gas will prompt many people to consider the bike as an alternative to their SUV.

Going Clubbing

I don't remember exactly when I joined my first running club, but I have vivid memories of the club itself. It was the Ann Arbor (Michigan) Track Club, and someone I'd met at a race must have persuaded me to attend a track workout.

Benoit Bernard, 41 (#902), from La Plaine, Reunion Island. “This was my 20th Ironman and my fourth in Kona.” (Finish Time: 11:36:36) “My best friend Gerard passed away two days ago. He had been sick for a long time, so I knew it was coming. But it was very hard to lose him. This race was for Gerard.”

Felix Welzel, 25 (#1738), from Braunschwe, Germany. “This is my third Ironman but my first in Kona.” (Finish Time: 12:02:50) “I was running through the course smiling and laughing the whole time because being here was like a dream. Even when I was walking, doing the Ironman in Hawaii was still a dream come true.”

John Brenkus, 36 (#172), from Calabasas, California. “This is my third Ironman but my first in Kona.” (Finish Time: 14:01:05) Brenkus was working on a feature story for the show he hosts on the FOX Sports Network called ‘Sports Science.’ The camera crew was following both Brenkus and soon-to-be Ironman champion Chris McCormack (shaking his hand). “This was the hardest thing I have done but my biggest personal accomplishment ever.”

Bob Sinclair, 47 (#572), from Minnamurra, Australia, with his wife Noelene and his daughters Kate (15) and Jane (12). “I have done Ironman Australia 15 times and Ironman New Zealand twice. This is my very first time in Hawaii.” (Finish Time: 13:11:07) “My race number, 572, is symbolic because I’m the 57th person to have completed Ironman Australia 10 times, and I have been here to Kona to watch this race twice. When I got into Kona, my wife had me quit my job so that I could train full time ;and she bought me a new bike. I am one lucky man. I had a ball and loved it all!”
