Brighid Klick
Over 7,100 runners from across the country participated in the 2013 Bayshore Marathon in Traverse City May 25, running either a full marathon, half marathon, or 10K along the beautiful Old Mission Peninsula coast.  Many marathoners set out to qualify for Boston, and while doing so were able to enjoy Michigan’s beauty, with Lake Michigan on one side of the course and Traverse City’s famous cherry orchards on the other.
Haslett couple Jonathan and Kelly Gries won the men’s and women’s divisions of the marathon with times of 2:25:11 and 2:51:03, respectively.  For the men’s division, David Mart, a Zeeland native, came in second with his time of 2:25:58. Third place went to Jesse Anderson from Fenton, crossing the finish line in 2:32:10. Over seven minutes behind winner Kelly Gries was Laconia, NH native Abbey Wood, who took second place in the women’s division with a time of 2:58:47. Jenni Culbertson, of Northville, finished at 3:01:22, rounding out the top three.
No one could keep up with Lake Orion native Clint Verran, who won first place in the half marathon by crossing the finish line in 1:06:38 at a pace of 5:05 minutes per mile.  Ann Arbor’s own Ian Forsyth followed in second, finishing in 1:08:38. Another runner from Haslett, Jacob Crowe, completed the course in third at 1:09:09.
In the women’s division, Caitlin Smith, of Oakland, Calif., finished with a 1:19:06 time, earning first place and 14th overall.  Otsego’s Michelle Grevenstuk cruised into second at 1:23:26, followed closely by Grand Blanc native Sheerie Teeple at 1:23:56.
The 31st Annual Bayshore Marathon saw PR’s and first time marathoners, Boston qualifiers and runners increasing their endurance by running the 10K. Regardless of what event they participated in, all were able to enjoy one of the most beautiful areas Michigan has to offer.
