Running for the Fun of It, The Color Run and Color Me Rad Come to Michigan
Brighid Klick
A new emphasis has been placed on running for fun as seen by the emergence of untimed running events that encourage participants to enjoy the sport and not worry about pace.  These events blend 5K’s, usually, with something crazy or strange—in this case, color.  The Color Run and Color Me Rad are races that bombard runners with a different color of non-toxic cornstarch at each kilometer, so that in the end everyone comes out rainbow-colored and smiling.
The Ypsilanti Color Run was held May 11, and drew over 15,000 runners.  Along with a part of the registration fee going toward charity, runners receive a Color Run white T-shirt that race volunteers aim to have multicolored by the end of the event.  The Color Run is not over when runners cross the finish line—immediately afterward, runners rush to the stage where a DJ plays tunes as color packets douse the crowd with color every fifteen minutes.  By participating in The Color Run events, participants learn to enjoy running while giving back to the community, and of course get some great pictures.
Color Me Rad is a run much like the now-famous Color Run—an un-timed 5K where every so often volunteers throw ‘color’ at runners and at the end, each runner receives a packet of ‘color’ to throw into the crowd.  The Detroit event, also held May 11, donated a portion of the proceeds to World AIDS Day Detroit.  Along with a part of the registration fee going toward this charity, runners receive a non-white race shirt to wear after the event, sunglasses, and a color bomb for the final color throw after the run.  Color Me Rad Detroit took things a step further than the Ypsilanti Color Run, using power washers and fire extinguishers filled with the colored cornstarch to blast runners with color along the course.  At the end of the race, the after-party was very similar to the one in Ypsilanti, with everyone celebrating the achievement of running a 5K and reveling in the rainbow clouds.
If you missed either of these races, don’t despair!  Both Color Me Rad and The Color Run will host three additional events in the Michigan-northern Ohio region.  Color Me Rad heads to Grand Rapids (May 25), Lansing (Sept. 14), and Toledo (Sept. 22), while The Color Run will entertain runners in Lansing (July 13), Windsor, Ontario (July 20), and Toledo (Aug. 17) before the summer comes to an end.  Be sure to check both websites for registration information, these events sell out quickly!  Registration for the July Color Runs goes live May 15, so get your spot while you still can.
