Bump & Run Trail Series #1, Yeah... they got Hammered
It was dark, rainy and stormy on the morning of June 21st.
Not the ideal mix of conditions for most running events.  But
then again, if you signed up for the craziness that the Muddy
Watters Bump and Run Trail Series provides, you already
know that this event isn’t your nice easy jog though the wild
flowers.  We love to get wet, in fact we welcome the rain!  It
makes for an extra nice mix of mud, sand, dirt, and anything
else we can get into along the way.

Just as the last of the racers completed their registration the
clouds moved out and the sun walked in.  We had a total of seventy-five racers that lined up
at the starting line.  Apparently there are a lot more crazy people out there then we had
anticipated!  Our racer registration more than doubled from the 1st Bump and Run last
year.  “Welcome to Bootcamp, B*T*H”!

The course this year had a great variety of exercises to keep our runners moving.  Starting
out with a ladder of squat jumps and squat thrusts the racers continued to the station
provided by Freeland Orthodontics for 50 mountain climbers.  Cliff Bar and Krav Maga
Detroit added in tricep dips and another round of squat jumps at their sponsored stations.
Eisbrenner Public Relations opted to have the racers perform push-ups in the river and Dr.
Douglas Thompson of Village Dental sponsored abdominal crunches on the sand at the
river bank.  That doesn’t seem too bad, you might think.  But, in the 3 miles of running
through muddy swamp water, down the river (yes the river) and 8 times up and down the
sledding hill, you have just created the “hardest 5k run” ever!

Trudging though the course with the best overall time and first in the male division was
Parker Roth.  He completed the course in 25:13.  Following close behind was Ken Cook
who completed the race in 27:29 and coming in third for the male division at 27:49 was Matt
Weber.  Finishing first for the ladies was Kelsey Gustafson, who completed the course in 31:
02.  A close second place went to Jennifer Haselhuhn with a time of 31:53 and third place
with a time of 32:26 was awarded to Shelly Otenbaker.  All the racers completed the course
and did a great job, with the exception of a “few” people who opted out of the “river run” by
accident.  We’ll get you next time!

Just as the last of the racers completed the course, the Muddy Watters Mini Bump and Run
kicked off.  Twelve brave and energetic boys and girls lined up for the race.  With stations
from jumping jacks to boxing into focus mitts, the kids had a wide range of activities that
took them on a run up and down the sledding hill and back to the Mountain Ash Pavilion.
Yes, we think it’s important to provide craziness for the entire family.

But the part that came after all of the mud slingin and a** kickin, was the highlight of the
morning. The racers, volunteers and all of their families had some serious home cookin
provided by Ken Watters!  Ken’s fabulous sloppy joes, baked beans and delicious brownies
waited just on the other side of the finish line.  What a way to end the morning!

Just when you think you can’t image any more fun in a race, along comes #2! See you back
in July for the dirty craziness of Muddy Watters Bump & Run #2!

Team Watters took the trails on Sunday, August 3rd to bike and run their way through a 7
mile course dotted with special challenges.  Team Motor City Bootcamp (Jeff and Dori
Watters), Team Fat and Slow (Jackie Watters and Rich Consul) and Team Mom and Dad
Rock (Ken and Ellen Watters) all represented the Watters Family during the 2008 Chicago
Muddy Buddy.

Along with 1400 other racers, the Watters’ teams lined up in a field to start the Muddy Buddy
race at 7am.  With a wave start, all teams took off on the course at a different starting time,
but all raced with the same theme, “if you can’t come in fast, you might as well come in
dirty”.  And dirty is what they did!

The Muddy Buddy is a mountain biking and running race with special challenges
strategically placed during the course.  One person of the 2 member team started on the
bike and the other person of the team started out running when the gun went off.  At around
the 1st mile marker the biker dropped the bike and scrambled over a climbing wall and then
took off running.  The running teammate came into the transition, conquered the climbing
wall and then took off on the bike.  The teammates leap frogged back and forth until they
had completed the entire 7 mile course.  Besides the climbing wall, each teammate
encountered a balance beam, monkey bars and a cargo net climb with a giant 15 foot
blowup slide on the other side.

The obstacles were fun and challenging, but they definitely saved the best for last! To finish
the race both teammates had to crawl face first on their stomachs through a 30 yard mud
pit!  Get Dirty!!!!

Great job to all racers!
