What's Your Favorite Place to Ski in Michigan?

This Month's Magazine

Stand Winter Fitness on its Head

Its time to change the mindset. The opportunities to train outdoors will be limited over the next few months. This month we address fitness from two perspectives — Setting sport specific goals and using a fitness ball to stay in shape. In addition, you'll find the Metro Detroit Ski Council Ski Guide inside, filled with a ski club directory, a bunch of trips to try and information on skiing safely.

Inspiration Leads to Gratitude, and More Inspiration

I just received a reminder to be grateful for the life I have and teh business I'm in.

On the Anniversary of being named the Subaru Athlete of the Year in our magazine in 2007, Mandi Tuite sent me an e-mail listing the things the award inspired her to accomplish.

It's an impressive list. Not only because of what is on it, but because last year Mandi was just beginning life as a cancer survivor.

Weight Training for Runners

There are several different types of resistance training equipment available to you in your local fitness club—free weights, Universal systems, Nautilus, Cam Systems, etc. They use different types of resistance: air pressure, fluid resistance, friction, pulleys, free weights, etc.
Which of these is best? It doesn’t matter. As long as you’re pushing or pulling against resistance and overloading the muscle you’ll gain strength.

Get Your Off-Road Nutrition. . . Without Falling off the Bike

Off-road nutrition is much more of a logistical mystery than a simple road triathlon, where you can use a bento box, carry a bar of some type or use gel packets. Off-road, you can’t take your hands off the bars to reach for a package, tear it open, and eat it anytime. Try doing that on a volcano in Maui, or on the twisty, winding roots of a single track trail and you’ll soon be licking fresh wounds.

The Salomon XT Wings Challenge Rewards Runners Who Test Their Limits With High Tech Prize Pack Featuring the New Salomon XT Wings and Nokia Nseries Smartphone.

Salomon took trail running to a new level of performance this year with the introduction of its breakthrough shoe, the Salomon XT Wings. Now Salomon is teaming up with Nokia to provide runners with a new high-tech way to track their adventures and share them with the world.

The Salomon XT Challenge awards a pair of Salomon XT Wings and a Nokia Nseries Smartphone to runners who dream up the most imaginative and challenging running routes. Then, the winners hit the trail in their XT Wings and share their adventure online, with maps, photos and detailed statistics from their run, uploaded via Nokia Sports Tracker technology.

Here's how it works: runners from all over the world come up with an inspired personal challenge, and submit their plans online at www.salomonrunning.com . Each month, Salomon will select the most creative challenge. That lucky runner gets a pair of Salomon XT Wings to wear for their challenge, and a Nokia Smartphone equipped with the new Sports Tracker software to document it. When they complete their challenge, they upload photos and data to the Salomon Running website, where other runners can check out dynamic maps of their route, complete with pictures that synch up to points on the map, plus every statistic from the run, including altitude, pace, speed and duration.

Some of the challenges so far have included an English runner who's recreating the Central London Tube map on her Sports Tracker map by running all 11 routes above ground, and an American runner who's working on her first 50 mile ultra-marathon on the beautiful and challenging Lake Tahoe course. A French runner challenged himself to run up the Eiffel Tower in less than 20 minutes, while a runner from New Zealand charted a difficult course across a "bridge to nowhere," filled with stunning and rugged terrain.

Even if they don't win the challenge, runners can still share their adventure on the Salomon Running website with Sports Tracker software. Nokia Sports Tracker is a GPS-based activity tracker that runs on Nokia Smartphones. It automatically stores information about workouts and routes into the users' online training diary, and is free to download. For more details on Sports Tracker, visit http://maps.salomonrunning.com .

Salomon's top athletes are also using Nokia Smartphones to share their adventures online. Be sure to check out their mobile blogs at www.salomonathleteblogs.com .
