The Road is Calling

The road race season in Michigan kicked off in April with Spring Training Series Races in Ann Arbor and Waterford and the Ciociaro Can Am Challenge Series in Windsor. Now that roadies are all warmed up, it's time to stretch their legs in some good old-fashioned road and criterium racing. In the coming weeks road cyclists can look forward to the Grattan Race Series kick-off, the Cone Azalia Classic road race, the Tour of Kensington Valley, the Priority Health Tour De Leelanau, the Tour De Gaslight Criterium and in June, a race that is quickly becoming a favorite among all racers, citizen and professional alike - The Superior Bike Fest in Marquette.

Bad News, Good News, More Questions

I just received a grim e-mail to end an otherwise unremarkable day. The subject line read "Ryan Shay Autopsy Released."

Going Clubbing

I don't remember exactly when I joined my first running club, but I have vivid memories of the club itself. It was the Ann Arbor (Michigan) Track Club, and someone I'd met at a race must have persuaded me to attend a track workout.

XTERRA, or off-road triahlon, is the fastest growing new concept in multisport with more than 100 events in 16 countries. Bordering on the extreme, this style of racing takes the conventional concept and ads the unpredictability of Mother Nature. For some athletes, it seemed a bit out of reach, a little cosmic, shall we say, but a new DVD helps all athletes realize they can too can do XTERRA. Endurance Films and Mach3 Multisport announce the DVD release of the first completely comprehensive guide to XTERRA training, XTERRA: Off Road Triathlon - Get Dirty. Produced in association with TEAM Unlimited, official organizers of the XTERRA triathlon series, the DVD serves to demystify the sport and open doors to a broader audience.

"We've been producing triathlon and fitness DVD's for over 9 years now, but this is our first dedicated project working with XTERRA," says founder Eric Feller. "It's an exciting category in sports and a great time for us to get involved.

XTERRA, or off-road triathlon, is the fastest growing new concept in multisport with more than 100 events in 16 countries. Bordering on the extreme, this style of racing takes the conventional framework of a road triathlon and adds the unpredictability of Mother Nature. XTERRA replaces the security of the open road with the challenges of undulating dirt, or mud, trails that wind between mountains, over rocks and fallen trees, through creeks and rivers, in some of the toughest conditions on the planet. Yet anyone can do it.

"The biggest thing keeping people from the sport was a fear and a perception that XTERRA was some kind of 500 pound gorilla...something that was beyond them," said host Brian Grasky, XTERRA Champion and USA Triathlon All-American. "We made this DVD for all athletes, whether triathletes or mountain bikers, beginner or advanced, to understand that there is nothing cosmic about doing an off-road triathlon. With the right knowledge and understanding, it can be a fun, challenging, and rewarding fitness goal that they can reach for and attain."

DVD Highlights include:
-60 minutes of comprehensive off road triathlon training
-Breathtaking footage from elite XTERRA races around the world
-Racing procedures to combat altitude, hills, trails, etc
-Nutrition specifics for training and racing off-road
-Gear selection: From bikes and hydration packs to tires and tools
-Bike Maintenance on and off the trail
-Practical training sections in swim, mt bike and trail run with workouts and drills

XTERRA: Off Road Triathlon - Get Dirty, $29.95, endurancefilms.com
